The Analytical Services Department of the Centre serves as a pivot for assaying sundry materials from Metallurgical and Allied industries, Research and Development Industries, Universities, Solid Minerals prospectors, Government and Private Organizations and the general public.
It is a known fact that there can never be any meaningful research and development without chemical analysis of the raw material(s) both qualitatively and quantitatively up to finished product(s). In view of this, the importance of the Department to the Centre cannot be overemphasized. To enable the Centre succeed on her mandate, the Department carries out her duties through two (2) structured divisions namely ANALYTICAL SERVICES DIVISION and ENVIRONMENTAL INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION DIVISION.
A. The Analytical Services Division has two (2) sections namely Wet Analytical Laboratory Section and Instrumental Analytical Laboratory Section. 1. WET ANALYTICAL LABORATORY SECTION: This laboratory is saddled with the task of carrying out the traditional classical (wet) method of analyses by gravimetric, titrimetric and colorimetric analyses to determine the major concentration(s) of elements in materials. Assorted analar grade chemicals/reagents and glass-wares are employed in the analytical processes. This section also prepares samples through digestion (acid attack) prior to instrumental analysis.
2. INSTRUMENTAL ANALYTICAL LABORATORY SECTION: In this laboratory, versatile analytical instrument/equipment are used for quantitative analysis of samples; raw materials, plants and processed/finished products. Available analytical instrumentS/equipment include: The Microwave Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer (MP - AES), Minipal 4-Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (ED-XRF); Optical Emission Spectrometer (OES) and Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS).
B. ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION CONTROL AND MONITORING DIVISION. Environmental Pollution Control and Monitoring Division has two (2) Sections namely: Environmental Pollution Control Section and Microbiological Analysis Section. The Division carries out research work on diverse pollution samples and issues arising from increased activities in the minerals, mining and processing sector in Nigeria. The Researchers had in the past years, carried out several investigations and general pollution research work in some states of the Country. The Division carries out physiochemical and microbiological analyses on water, waste water, effluents, soil samples and any other pollution samples.
The Division was involved in a linkage work with the Federal Ministry of Environment on mining related pollution and is a Certified Consultant to the National Environmental Standards Regulation and Enforcement Agency (NESREA) on mining related issues.
